Now you can travel free on highway, but on one condition

Srinagar, Sep 11: India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced new amendment in Highway toll collections, title 'The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates Collection) Amendment Rules 2024.

The new change introduces a toll-free allowance for private vehicles travelling short distances along the national highways and expressways, Times of India reported.

What’s the new policy change?

The private vehicles equipped with a functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) won't be charged for journeys up to 20kms a day on highways. If the journey exceeds the given limit, the toll will be calculated based on the actual distance travelled.

The notification from the Ministry further read, “Provided also that exclusive lane can be earmarked for Global Navigation Satellite System On-Board Unit fitted vehicle and in case vehicle enters such lane, without a valid, functional Global Navigation Satellite System On-Board Unit, shall pay a fee equivalent to two times of the user fee applicable at that fee plaza.”
