Srinagar, Jul 16: Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander of the Northern Command, undertook a comprehensive visit to North and South Kashmir to assess operational readiness and strategic deployment of forces amid  the ongoing “Operation Shiva” aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats in valley.

Accompanied by GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava, Lt Gen Sharma was briefed by field commanders on the progress and strategic outcomes of Operation Shiva, the ongoing multi-agency counter-insurgency operation launched earlier this month. The operation, jointly led by the Indian Army, J&K Police, and paramilitary forces, is focused on intensifying area domination, eliminating residual terrorist networks, and safeguarding the pilgrimage routes during the annual Amarnath Yatra, which witnesses lakhs of devotees trekking to the holy cave shrine.

In his address to troops stationed in forward posts and high-altitude terrains of North and South Kashmir, Lt Gen Sharma praised their dedication, coordination, and operational effectiveness. “The security apparatus must remain vigilant, responsive, and technically proficient to deal with emerging threats. The safety of civilians and the sanctity of the Yatra must remain our top priorities,” he stated.

With this year’s Amarnath Yatra drawing significant footfall amid improved weather conditions, the security forces are on high alert. The route, particularly through Anantnag and Ganderbal districts, has witnessed a visible increase in troop deployment, surveillance drones, and checkpoint inspections. In the wake of recent intelligence inputs about possible infiltration attempts and threats from Pakistan-based terror groups, Operation Shiva has also focused on sealing infiltration routes across the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in the Kupwara, Baramulla, and Bandipora sectors.
