Northern Army Commander reviews security preparedness in Kashmir ahead of Amarnath Yatra
Srinagar, Jun 2: In a high-level review of the security situation in Kashmir ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander Northern Command (#ArmyCdrNC), undertook a visit to the Chinar Corps headquarters in Srinagar on Monday.
The visit, aimed at evaluating operational readiness and current security dynamics, comes at a critical juncture as the Union Territory gears up for the commencement of the Amarnath pilgrimage next month.
During his visit, Lt Gen Sharma was briefed extensively by the Chinar Corps Commander, Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava , and senior field commanders about the prevailing internal security situation, counter-terrorism grid, infiltration threats from across the Line of Control (LoC), and the comprehensive measures being implemented to safeguard the Yatra.
With the Amarnath Yatra scheduled to begin on July 3, the security apparatus has been mobilised to ensure a smooth and safe passage for thousands of pilgrims expected to visit the holy cave shrine located at an altitude of over 3,800 meters in the Himalayas. The pilgrimage is set to be conducted over a 52-day period this year, concluding on August 19. The Army Commander reviewed detailed plans laid out for the two traditional routes — the Baltal route in Ganderbal district and the Pahalgam route in Anantnag district — both of which will see enhanced deployment of troops, surveillance equipment, and quick reaction teams.
In addition, aerial surveillance, night-vision patrols, drone support, and mountain warfare units are being coordinated to prevent any disruption or threat from anti-national elements. Lt Gen Sharma, while interacting with officers and jawans of the Chinar Corps, praised their “steadfast commitment, exceptional professionalism, and unflinching resilience” in facing adverse weather, complex terrain, and continuous security threats. He emphasised the need for sustained operational vigilance and seamless inter-agency coordination, especially in light of the Yatra’s scale and its spiritual and cultural significance. “Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, #ArmyCdrNC, visited Chinar Corps to evaluate operational readiness and assess the current security environment. The Army Commander was briefed on the prevailing security situation and operational preparedness of the formation.Additionally, he reviewed security measures for the #AmarnathYatra to ensure its safe and seamless execution.

The Amarnath Yatra, one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages, draws thousands of devotees every year. The 2024 Yatra passed without major incident. Civil-military synergy remains at the core of Yatra security planning, with the Indian Army playing a central role in both on-ground security and humanitarian support, including rescue operations, medical camps, and logistical aid in case of natural calamities.
