Noorbagh graveyard damaged in floods
Srinagar, Sep 5: Gushing waters of river Jhelum damaged a graveyard at Noorbagh area on the city outskirts on Friday.
Many graves were partially damaged, battered by gushing floodwaters that entered the low-lying area after the Jhelum swelled, the local said.
“This is like losing them all over again,” said an elderly resident, with tears in her eyes as she pointed towards her parents’ submerged grave, speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
Locals said the boundary walls of the graveyard were also damaged. Many graves now lie exposed, some headstones tilted or broken, as families struggle to restore what they can.
“We rushed here with spades and sandbags, trying to protect the graves,” said another resident. “But the water flow was too strong. Watching the place where our loved ones rest being ravaged by floods was unbearable.”
The community has now come together, planning to rebuild the walls and safeguard the graveyard from future calamities—(KNO)
