No snowfall till Jan 22: Weatherman

Srinagar, Jan 07: The prolonged dry weather, along with bone-chilling cold, is likely to persist through the second and third weeks of the first month of the new year, 2026, in the Kashmir plains, as the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast shows no precipitation in Jammu and Kashmir till January 22.

As per the forecast, the minimum temperature is expected to further plummet till January 10 as Chillai Kalan approaches its peak phase in Kashmir. However, temperatures are likely to witness a slight upward trend after January 10 and are expected to rise by at least 1.2 degrees Celsius.

The MeT Srinagar said that generally dry and cold weather is likely to dominate meteorological landscape of Jammu and Kashmir till January 22.

It said that a few places in the Jammu division will continue to witness dense fog over the next few days.

Meanwhile, as pew data, Srinagar, the capital city, recorded a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, up several degrees from minus 4 degrees Celsius on Monday night, they said.

The tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir as it shivered at a low of minus 10.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, the officials said.

The night temperature in Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district improved by a degree to settle at a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, they said.

In south Kashmir's tourist resort of Pahalgam, the minimum settled at a low of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1 degrees Celsius, the officials said.

Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 3.6 degrees Celsius.
