NIELIT to set up AI data lab at its Srinagar campus soon
Srinagar, Feb 20: Asserting that its Srinagar centre has done noticeable work in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Director General of National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) and Vice Chancellor of NIELIT Deemed-to-be University, Dr MM Tripathi on Thursday said that the institute will soon set up an AI data lab at its Rangreth campus, here.
Speaking to Greater Kashmir on the sidelines of its 28th Director’s meeting at SKICC here, Tripathi said the upcoming lab will be used for various research purposes.
“In the past also, our students have made AI models for carpet design. With the new AI data centre we will be able to make technological intervention in horticulture, agriculture and also be able to tackle climate change and even address the issue of pollution,” said Tripathi. Commenting on the recent Union Budget allocation to AI development, Tripathi said under the “India AI mission” the first AI data centre was set up by NIELIT in New Delhi, following which the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MEITY) has earmarked funds for NIELIT to set up 27 similar centres.
He said NIELIT has a training facility for security personnel with IT skills, besides running a specialised MTech programme in cyber forensics.
“We will upgrade our cyber security and forensics lab soon,” said Tripathi.
Notably, NIELIT J&K’s 28th All India Directors' Meet of NIELIT saw a gathering that brought together directors from NIELIT centers across the country to engage in discussions on the institution's future growth, academic advancements, and industry collaborations. The meeting focused on key topics, including the revamping of proposals and schemes, expansion strategies for NIELITcenters, advancements in research and academics, consultancy services, strengthening industry partnerships, the introduction of new courses, and enhanced placement initiatives for students.
Directors from 53 NIELIT centers participated in the meet. Dr Tulika Pandey, Group Coordinator & Scientist-G of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Govt.of India; Dr MM Tripathi addressed the attendees. Their insights highlighted the need for strengthening research, broadening academic programs,fostering stronger industry linkages, and ensuring skill development to enhance employability.
