NHAI, Jio partner to launch mobile safety alerts on national highways
New Delhi, Dec 2: To enhance road safety and improve the travel experience, NHAI has signed an MoU with Reliance Jio to roll out a mobile-based safety alert system across the National Highway network.
Using Jio’s 4G and 5G infrastructure, travellers will receive advance warnings on their phones as they approach accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas and emergency diversions.
Alerts will be issued through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls.
The system, which requires no new roadside hardware, will automatically work for all Jio users travelling on or near highways. It will be integrated in phases with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the ‘Rajmargyatra’ app and helpline 1033.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said the initiative will help commuters make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices, setting a new benchmark in tech-enabled road safety. Jio President Jyotindra Thacker said the partnership leverages the company’s extensive network to deliver timely alerts at scale. A pilot rollout will begin under select NHAI regional offices, with full compliance to regulatory and data-protection norms.
NHAI said similar collaborations will be undertaken with other telecom providers to further strengthen real-time road safety communication nationwide.
