Uri, Sep 10: Residents of border town Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have welcomed the starting of a new bus service by the Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC), connecting Srinagar to Uri and vice versa. According to officials, the bus will depart from Srinagar at 7:45 am and return from Uri at 3:15 pm.

The service was officially flagged off from the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar by MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi, along with other government officials. “This was a genuine demand of the people of Uri.

The new bus service will help promote border tourism in the region, and eventually, we hope to extend it to Kaman Post,” Dr Sajjad said. Manzoor Ahmad, a local social activist, expressed gratitude over the starting of the service. “It was a long-pending demand of Uri residents, and we are happy it has finally been fulfilled.”

“We had earlier approached both Baramulla and Srinagar’s Western Bus Service authorities to start this service, but no action was taken until now,” he added. Residents said the new service will provide much-needed relief to patients, students, and employees who travel between Uri and Srinagar on a daily basis. “We must ensure the success of this service so it continues to operate regularly. The government should also consider introducing more buses on other routes,” locals in Uri told Greater Kashmir.
