New construction at KU's main campus raises concerns over loss of greenery

Srinagar, Mar 29: Fresh construction work at the Naseem Bagh area of Kashmir University (KU) has raised concerns about the loss of greenery at the campus.

The stakeholders have expressed concern over the fresh construction saying it will lead to potential loss of greenery, particularly the iconic Chinars that adorn the area.

Notably, Naseem Bagh area of the KU Hazratbal campus is known for its lush greenery and historical significance which is surrounded by majestic Chinars that have long been a symbol of natural beauty at the campus.

The stakeholders said that the construction of concrete structures may lead to the gradual disappearance of the green cover that has defined KU's ambiance for generations.

"The varsity could have avoided constructing the concrete building in the Naseem Bagh area and selected some other location for it. The varsity administration should have sought expert opinions before going ahead with the construction work," said Muzaffar Ahmad, a senior citizen from Srinagar.

However, the KU authorities have ensured that not a single Chinar tree will be uprooted at the construction site.

"The varsity has started construction work for an indoor sports stadium and there are no Chinars in its dimension. So no chinar will be uprooted there," Registrar KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal told Greater Kashmir.

However, the citizens have expressed dismay over constructing "concrete monsters" at the campus.

"Our worry is that the construction of more concrete structure will have a negative impact on the campus location which is often thronged by visitors for its enchanting beauty," Muzaffar Ahmad said.

He said constructing concrete structures will ultimately lead to cutting of Chinars around the building which is coming up at the site.

"Their loss would not only affect the aesthetic appeal of the campus but also signify a disregard for our environmental heritage," he said.

Meanwhile, the Registrar KU, Prof Naseer Iqbal said the construction of Indoor Sports Stadium was going on at an isolated spot near professor colony. "The patch of land was unutilised till date. We will ensure that no Chinar will be cut to pave the way for construction of the sports complex," Registrar KU told Greater Kashmir.
