As the rapid pace of modern life changes priorities, in Jammu and Kashmir, as in other parts of the world, the elderly are often sidelined. The recent initiative by the Moul Mouj Foundation, which introduced the Lifetime Privilege Card to provide essential health support to distinguished seniors, is a positive development. While this effort is laudable, it brings our focus to a broader societal issue: the neglect of our elder population. Today, traditional familial structures are increasingly strained by economic and social changes. There is a substantial portion of the elderly in this region that lack access to essential healthcare, with government systems failing to adequately address their needs. This neglect is not only about lack of medical care, but also about social isolation of our elders. As the establishment of family weakens, old people are left alone, uncared for. The Moul Mouj Foundation’s initiatives serve as an important reminder of the role communities and organisations can play in bridging these gaps. However, depending solely on private foundations in this matter is not sufficient. What is required is a comprehensive approach that involves government action, community involvement, and most importantly, individual realisation. Taking care of the elderly goes beyond healthcare. It is about including them in our social lives, showing respect, and giving them the love and honour they deserve. It is about appreciating their wisdom and experience by building connections and spending quality time with them. It is high time we self-introspect and reflect on our values and civilization’s depth. Our community’s true strength is displayed not just in advancements in technology or economy, but in how we care for all the members of our society. It is our collective responsibility to provide our elders with a life of dignity, love, and respect.
