Kupwara, Jul 20: A segregation shed constructed by the Rural Development Department (RDD) in Budkoot area of Handwara has become a symbol of neglect, causing inconvenience for the locals and commuters.

The residents of the area told Greater Kashmir that the shed was constructed two years ago with an aim of improving solid waste management but the facility has been left abandoned with heaps of garbage bulging out and emission of foul smell has become a major nuisance for the locals and commuters travelling on Handwara-Wader road.

“Located in close proximity of a scenic water reservoir, recently developed and promoted as a tourist spot, the awful condition of the shed is not only affecting locals but also impacting the experience for tourists visiting this place,” said a local Aadil Akbar.

“This place was developed as a tourist spot so that the families and tourists can spend quality time here but the foul smell from the shed keeps them away from the spot. Even the matter was brought into the notice of the concerned department several times but they prefer to watch the whole situation as mute spectators,” he added.

Tourists have also voiced their disappointment over the situation. “We came here after hearing about the beautiful dam view, but the filthy smell and the sight of overflowing garbage shocked us,” said a tourist from Sopore.

Locals said that they have brought this issue into the notice of concerned authorities numerous times but nothing has yielded so far. “If the shed cannot be maintained, it should be relocated or at least cleaned once a month,” they added.
