NC unit Kargil reunites with party

Srinagar, Nov 8: The National Conference (NC) unit Kargil has reunited with the party after nearly six months.

The united had parted ways with the party following major differences and a revolt in May this year. The reunion was held recently after a delegation from Kargil called on the National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and National Conference Vice President and the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah in Srinagar on Thursday. The delegation comprised of Member of Parliament Ladakh Mohd Haneefa Jan, Additional general secretary Qamar Ali Akhoon, CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohammad Jaffar besides representatives of various religious, social organisations and National conference workers.

It was after the National conference faced a massive revolt in Kargil district of Ladakh ahead of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year after the district unit Kargil submitted a mass resignation letter to the party high command. This significant setback for the National Conference in Kargil came following disagreements over the choice of candidate for the Lok Sabha elections between the National Conference, Congress who are part of I.N.D.I.A bloc and local units of NC and Congress. The development came after the National Conference high command asked the party cadre in Kargil to support the INDIA bloc official candidate Tsering Namgyal in the Ladakh parliamentary constituency, which the National Conference cadre refused.

To mention, Fractures emerged within the I.N.D.I.A bloc over the choosing of a candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Ladakh with the local Congress leaders and the National Conference leaders in Kargil nominated Mohd Hanifa Jan as the independent candidate for the Ladakh Parliament seat. Jan is the district president of NC.

However, the move contrasted with the Congress High Command's decision, which nominated T Namgayal, the opposition leader in the Leh Hill Development Council (LADHC), as the party's official nominee. The independent candidate Haneefa Jan won the Lok Sabha election and is representing the Ladakh in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the National Conference high command has asked Mohd Haneefa Jan to continue as the district president of NC unit Kargil while as senior National conference leader Qamar Ali Akhoon will continue to be the Additional general secretary of the party . Additional General Secretary National conference , Qamar Ali Akhoon told Greater Kashmir that there were differences which forced them to resign but “our resignation was not accepted by the party high command,” adding that “we are part of the party and will further strengthen the party in Kargil and Leh.”
