Speaking to reporters in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, Abdullah said that these were the same people who supported plebiscite and freedom.

He said that the NC workers suffered terribly during the troubled nineties.

“We fought elections in 1996. Our houses were bombed. Our workers were killed when they were coming out of Masjids when these ‘BJP people’ were sleeping inside their homes,” he said.

Earlier, addressing an election rally, Abdullah criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks about a community during the Lok Sabha polls.

“You may have heard what our PM said about a particular community. He termed them as invaders and said they would snatch the property of the other community,” Abdullah said

He said that the fact was that the community he attacked had never snatched the rights of any other community.

“The community only seeks its rights. It does not snatch the rights of others,” he said.

Abdullah said that he had never heard such a “vitriolic speech” in his entire life.

“Since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, I have heard speeches of many prime ministers and they always wanted to bring communities together and promote love. But the present government wants to pit one community against another,” he said.

Abdullah appealed to the people to protect their identity and rights by voting for NC candidates.
