NC failed to address critical issues while in power: Sajad Lone

Kupwara, Nov 16: People Conference President and Member Assembly Langate Sajad Gani Lone has criticised the National Conference (NC) for relying on symbolic acts rather than addressing the pressing issues of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at a press conference in Handwara on Saturday, Lone accused the NC of failing the people of the region during its time in power.

“Symbolism, such as draping shawls on leaders, won’t undo the damage inflicted on Jammu and Kashmir over the years,” Lone remarked, taking a direct jab at the NC’s recent activities. He called for meaningful dialogue and collaboration among all political stakeholders to restore the dignity and stability in J&K.

Lone pointed to the controversial 1987 elections as a turning point that plunged Kashmir into political instability. “No one addresses the aftermath of 1987, which triggered a prolonged era of turmoil in the Valley,” he said. The events of that year, widely regarded as rigged, are often cited as a flashpoint for the unrest in the region, he said.

Lone also accused the NC of using its position in power to suppress opposition voices rather than working for the collective good of Jammu and Kashmir. “If they are serious about reclaiming what has been lost, they need to engage with all political entities and acknowledge their mistakes,” he added.

In a sharp escalation of his criticism, the PC President alleged a covert alliance between the NC and the BJP, casting doubts on the party’s political motives.“The NC has failed to prioritise critical issues like the Indus Water Treaty, which were conveniently ignored during election campaigns but have now become urgent matters,” he said. Stressing the need for unity, Lone urged all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir to put aside their differences and work collectively for the region’s progress.

“It is time for inclusive politics that prioritises peace, prosperity, and the welfare of the people over narrow political gains,” he concluded.

Lone’s remarks come at a time when regional parties are grappling with shifting political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir. His call for unity and accountability resonates as political discourse intensifies in the region.
