Baramulla, Sep 10: The political landscape of Uri assembly segment is witnessing high drama after Apni party extended its support to independent candidate Taj Mohiudin.

The Apni Pparty on Monday extended its support to Taj Mohiudin in the assembly segment Uri. Following Apni party’s support, the PDP who earlier decided to back the candidature of Taj Mohiudin as independent candidate, withdrew its support and decided to field its own candidate in the constituency.

The NC candidate Dr Sajad during a press conference on Tuesday accused Taj Mohiudin of being a proxy for the BJP, a charge vehemently denied by the senior politician.

Dr Sajad claimed that the Apni Party’s decision to support Mohiudin was part of a secret deal brokered in Delhi with BJP leaders. “Taj Mohiudin visited Delhi and struck a deal with BJP leadership, receiving their backing for his independent candidacy,” he alleged.

He said the BJP deliberately did not field a candidate from Uri, instead opted to support Mohiudin through “proxy teams” like the Apni Party.

According to NC candidate, Apni Party had previously assured the people of Uri that they would field a young candidate, but their decision to back Mohiudin revealed their “desperation” as a “B-team” of the BJP, aimed at countering the NC-Congress alliance.

“PDP, recognising this arrangement, immediately withdrew its support for Taj Mohiudin, and their leadership has urged people not to vote for any BJP-backed candidate, instead choosing NC, PDP, or Congress candidates,” added Dr Sajad.

In response to these accusations, Taj Mohiudin dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated. Speaking to the press, he firmly denied any connection with the BJP, challenging Dr Sajad to provide proof of his alleged visit to Delhi for negotiations. “If Dr Sajad can prove that I visited Delhi to meet BJP leaders, I will quit politics. Otherwise, he must resign,” he stated announcing his intention to file case against Dr Sajad and is also mulling to complaint before the returning officer and the election commissioner.

The independent candidate also clarified that his candidacy was supported by the Apni Party without any political conditions. “Altaf Bukhari offered his support, and I am deeply grateful for that,” said Taj Mohiudin. He said he is committed to the welfare of people of Uri and rejecting the idea of being influenced by any national political party.
