Navy to commission first Mahe-Class anti-submarine vessel
New Delhi, Nov 23: The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Mahe, the first vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 24 November 2025.
According to an official release, the ceremony will be hosted by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, and will be presided over by General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff.
The commissioning marks the induction of a new generation of indigenous shallow-water combatants, described as sleek, swift, and resolutely Indian. With over 80% indigenous content, the Mahe-class represents a major step forward in India’s capabilities in warship design, construction, and systems integration. Once operational, INS Mahe will operate as a ‘Silent Hunter’ on the Western Seaboard, strengthening the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities in strategically important coastal waters. The vessel is expected to play a critical role in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers, reflecting both self-reliance in defence manufacturing and the rapid advancement of India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
