Narkara wetland chokes under pollution, encroachments

Srinagar, Oct 23: Residents of Peerbagh, Humhama, Rawalpora, and adjoining areas have raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Narkara wetland and its flood channel along the Doodh Ganga tributary.

Locals said the flood channel at Narkara/Nandorgund, near Peerbagh Bridge, has been blocked by a bund of dredged soil from 2024 dredging works, along with illegal constructions, leaving nearby neighbourhoods vulnerable. Residents warned that even moderate rainfall could trigger severe flooding.

“We have approached the Flood Control Department several times, but no action has been taken,” said a local. "Untreated sewage and industrial waste continue to choke the wetland, spreading foul odours and creating mosquito breeding grounds. Children and the elderly are reportedly falling ill with respiratory and stomach ailments."

Residents said that despite directives from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to remove encroachments and restore the wetland, authorities have failed to act. They are demanding the immediate removal of the bund, restoration of the flood channel, reclamation of encroached land, and an end to pollution.

“Immediate government intervention is necessary to prevent worsening of flood risks and health hazards,” said a resident. Environmental experts have also stressed the wetland’s importance in flood control, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity conservation.
