Multiple avalanches block Srinagar-Leh NH for 2nd day
Ganderbal, Mar 23: Two days after its reopening, the Srinagar-Leh National Highway was blocked on Saturday by multiple avalanches that occurred at different places along the route, disrupting the traffic movement.
An official said that on Friday, the road was closed due to slippery conditions following a fresh spell of light snowfall along Zojila, while overnight multiple avalanches occurred at different spots on the highway, resulting in the closure of the highway for the second day.
As per the traffic plan on Saturday, traffic was scheduled from the Drass side towards Sonamarg, however, due to the closure of the highway, hundreds of Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) who headed toward Ladakh with essential commodities are stranded there.
Hundreds of vehicles with essential commodities are also stranded on the Sonamarg side and are awaiting road opening.
The official said that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has pressed its machines into work for clearing the avalanches to restore the road for traffic.
