MRCS&G, SKUAST-K unveils vision document to boost ruminant research
Ganderbal, May 23: The Mountain Research Centre for Sheep and Goat (MRCS&G), under the aegis of SKUAST-K, hosted a pivotal brainstorming session at the Deans Conference Hall, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, to unveil its strategic vision document titled “Strategic Roadmap for MRCS&G: Vision 2030.”
The session brought together key academic figures, university officers, and scientists to outline a comprehensive plan for advancing small ruminant research and development in the Kashmir Division.
The meeting was chaired by Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-K, and attended by Directors, Deans, and senior officials from various departments, including the Sheep Husbandry Department. Scientists from MRCS&G, heads of divisions, and other experts contributed to the discussion, aimed at setting future research priorities.
Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Reshi, Senior Scientist and Head of MRCS\&G, presented the Centre’s strategic initiatives. These include genetic improvement of sheep germplasm, development of breed-specific farms, creation of a phenomic database, expansion of Corriedale germplasm through field-based Horti-Sheep models, and the introduction of precision feeding systems. He also highlighted plans to upgrade MRCS&G’s infrastructure in alignment with SKUAST-K’s broader research goals.
One of the key highlights of the session was the unveiling of the Smart Sheep Breeder App, a tool aimed at modernising breeding practices. A proposal for launching dairy goat farming initiatives was also introduced to diversify the Centre’s research scope. Other major discussions included the restructuring of the breed repository and the launch of skill-based certificate and diploma programs for farmers.
Prof. Haroon Rashid Naik, Director Research at SKUAST-K, assured full institutional support for MRCS&G’s initiatives, while Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, reiterated the university’s commitment to entrepreneurship programs for farmers in collaboration with the Centre.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ganai commended the Centre’s farmer-focused approach and urged researchers to collaborate closely with the university’s veterinary faculty and developmental departments. He emphasised the role of teamwork and inter-departmental coordination in achieving the Centre’s ambitious goals.
“This brainstorming session is a milestone in strengthening SKUAST-K’s resolve to promote sustainable and innovative agricultural practices, especially in small ruminant development,” Prof. Ganai noted.
Dr. Basharat Kuthoo, Joint Director of the Sheep Husbandry Department, expressed his department’s support for the on-ground implementation of the Centre’s technologies.
Veteran academics and officials, including Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Kirmani (former Head, MRCS&G), Prof. Shabir Ahmad Wani (Director Planning), and Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Wani (Director Finance), also participated and shared valuable insights.
The session began with a welcome address by Prof. Riaz Ahmad Shah, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Masood Saleem Mir, Associate Director of Research (Animal Sciences).
