Q: Why does my elderly parent feel unusually tired or sleepy during summer afternoons, even with rest?A: Heat can cause circulatory strain and drop in blood pressure, especially in elders on heart or BP medications. This results in fatigue, drowsiness and light-headedness. Ensure their medication is reviewed by a doctor during hot months.

Q: My mother complains of swelling in her feet during summer. Is it related to heat?

A: Sometimes, yes, peripheral edema (swelling in feet/ankles) is common in elders during hot weather due to blood vessels dilating. Encourage leg elevation, reduce salt intake and check with your doctor, if medications may be contributing.

Q: Can summer worsen arthritis or joint pain in elders?

A: Yes, fluid imbalance, inactivity due to heat, and poor sleep can worsen joint stiffness. Gentle indoor exercises, regular stretching, and proper hydration can help manage this.

Q: Is loss of appetite normal in hot weather for elderly people?

A: Some appetite reduction is seen due to slowed digestion in heat. Offer small, frequent, cooling meals and avoid oily/spicy foods. Monitor for unintentional weight loss or weakness.

Q: My elderly father complains of itching or skin irritation in summer. What should we do?

A: Dry skin, fungal infections, or sweat rashes are common. Use mild, non-perfumed moisturizers, cotton clothing, and keep skin folds clean and dry. Avoid overuse of talcum powders.

Q: Can heat affect sleep in the elderly?

A: Yes, heat disturbs sleep cycles and can worsen insomnia in seniors. Keep the room ventilated, use light bedding and avoid screen and caffeine before bedtime.

Q: Do elders need to reduce their physical activity during hot days?

A: Not completely, but timing and intensity should be adjusted. Avoid outdoor walks from 10 am to 5 pm. Encourage light indoor activity like stretching, chair exercises in cool parts of the day.

Q: Can summer affect mental health in the elderly?

A: Yes. Heat-related fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep can worsen anxiety or depression. Keep routines flexible, stay connected socially and consult a doctor if mood changes persist.

Q: Is it safe for elders to consume wazwan or heavy food during summer weddings?

A: Yes, but in moderation and in the evening. Rich, oily foods in hot weather can cause acidity, bloating and fatigue. Encourage smaller portions and more fluid intake after such meals.

Q: My father takes insulin. Does summer affect storage?

A: Yes. Insulin should be stored between 2°C and 8°C, preferably in a refrigerator (not freezer). Exposure to heat renders it ineffective. Also, monitor for hypoglycemia, which can be masked by heat symptoms.
