Moul Mouj Foundation observes World Stroke Day
Srinagar, Oct 29: Bibi Halima College of Nursing and Medical Technology (BHCNMT), in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Ageing (CISA), Moul Mouj Foundation, observed World Stroke Day 2025 with an awareness event highlighting the theme of prevention, timely recognition and community response to stroke emergencies.
In her welcome address, Principal BHCNMT, Nasreen Jan emphasised the importance of knowing the early warning signs of stroke and acting swiftly, noting that awareness among healthcare students and professionals can save countless lives.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Zubair Saleem, Senior Geriatric Consultant, explained stroke awareness through the “BE FAST” mnemonic — Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, and Time — stressing that any sudden loss of balance, blurred vision, drooping face, weak arm, slurred speech, nausea or vomiting calls for immediate medical attention because in stroke, “every minute counts.”
He emphasized that up to 80% of strokes are preventable by taking charge of one’s health — controlling blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and heart rhythm, along with quitting smoking and alcohol, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and managing stress effectively. Dr. Saleem reminded that awareness is the strongest defense: “Recognize the signs, act fast, and live smart — because preventing a stroke begins long before it happens.”
He further remarked that the role of nurses extends far beyond hospital walls — “They are life saviors not only in wards but also in their homes and communities.”
The interactive Q&A session saw enthusiastic participation from students, who asked insightful questions related to diet, lifestyle, and early detection of stroke. The program was attended by faculty members and students of BHCNMT.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Tabassum Akhter, Assistant Professor, BHCNMT, who expressed gratitude to the guest speaker and reiterated the college’s commitment to continuous learning and public health awareness.
