Moul Mouj Foundation observes World Alzheimer’s Day

Srinagar, Sep 24: Bibi Halima College of Nursing & Medical Technology (BHCNMT), in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Ageing (CISA), Moul Mouj Foundation, observed World Alzheimer’s Day at BHCNMT, Kathi Darwaza, Srinagar.

The participants included B.Sc. Nursing students of Bibi Halima College of Nursing and Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing 3rd Year students of the IGNOU Study Centre at BHCNMT.

The program began with a welcome address by Nasreen Jan, Principal BHCNMT, who highlighted the importance of nursing students learning about dementia in the elderly, stressing that future healthcare professionals must be sensitive to the unique challenges of ageing populations.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Zubair Saleem, Senior Geriatric Consultant and Gerontologist, who emphasised the crucial role of nursing professionals in managing Alzheimer’s disease, particularly in home-based care. He described nurses as the integral pillar in dementia care and shared practical insights on handling patients with compassion, patience, and skill.

The session was followed by an engaging panel discussion featuring BHCNMT faculty members including Tabasum Ara, along with a question-and-answer interaction. Students and faculty raised varied queries on dementia management, generating a lively exchange of ideas and reflecting the keen interest of the participants.

The vote of thanks was presented by Tabassum Akhter, Assistant Professor BHCNMT, who underlined the importance of recognizing early symptoms of dementia and reducing the stigma surrounding the condition.

Students expressed that the program changed their perspective—realising that dementia is a disease like any other and not a cause for shame within families. They also learned that mild forgetfulness in the elderly is not always dementia and that early recognition is vital as prevalence continues to rise.

It is pertinent to mention that students of Bibi Halima College of Nursing, along with IGNOU Study Centre trainees at BHCNMT, undergo community geriatric training and clinical experience at CISA, Moul Mouj Foundation, as per Indian Nursing Council norms.
