Srinagar, Oct 1: The high-level delegation of officers led by the Union Secretary Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), Sanjay Kumar, has expressed its concern over the declining learning outcomes among the school children across Jammu and Kashmir.

On Wednesday, a high-level meeting was chaired by Additional Secretary DSEL at Taj Vivanta to ascertain the reasons for declining learning outcomes among the students.

In the meeting, it was revealed that the learning outcomes of the students in schools across Jammu and Kashmir were remarkable during 2017 and 2021, but have declined in 2024.

In the backdrop of this, the officers on a visit to Kashmir to review the education sector sought reasons for the poor performance. The officers took a review of Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH).

During the meeting, Director PARAKH delivered a presentation and discussed the dwindling learning outcomes of students in schools across J&K schools.

"In 2017, the learning outcomes of students were above the national level. In 2021, the performance of students in terms of learning outcomes was also remarkable. But the percentage was below the national average in 2024," the official who was part of the meeting told Greater Kashmir.

He said the team of officers from DSEL instructed the officers of J&K School Education Department (SED) to train the teachers properly to improve the learning outcomes of the students in schools.

"Suggestions were put forth that proper monitoring and focus should be laid on elementary level classes, particularly primary division, which will in turn improve the learning outcomes of the students," an official said.

He said the department was asked to up-scaling of teachers and improve the teaching methodology to enable students to improve their learning outcomes.

Earlier, the team of officers visited various schools in Srinagar and the Budgam district to take a review of the facilities available in educational institutions.

"The officers visited the schools having the best facilities and those schools having poor facilities in Srinagar and Budgam districts. The officers also visited a few schools to review sports facilities and infrastructure available for the students," the official said.

Meanwhile, during the meeting on Wednesday, the officers from DSEL have also taken a review of the Holistic Progress Card (HPC) of the students as well.

As already reported by this newspaper, a delegation of 40 officers led by Union Secretary DSEL visited Kashmir to take a review of the education sector. The team included the Director NCERT, the Chairman CBSE, besides senior officers from DSEL.
