MLA Tariq Karra corners Govt over shortage of drinking water in Srinagar
Srinagar, Oct 29: The Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the central Shalteng constituency, Tariq Hameed Karra on Wednesday cornered the JK Government over a shortage of potable water in the city.
During the question hour session in the Legislative Assembly, Tariq Hameed Karra who is also the president JKPCC said that Srinagar being the capital city always faces the shortage of potable water.
Karra had sought the details of measures taken for tackling water scarcity in Srinagar district besides the New Water Supply schemes initiated or under consideration. The minister in-charge, while replying to the query informed the House that various measures were being taken to improve water supply scenario in Srinagar which include construction of overhead tanks at multiple spots and the augmentation by way of laying of new network of pipelines and extension of existing pipeline system.
"In addition to this, various steps are also being taken to improve efficiency of water treatment plants," the minister informed the House.
To this MLA Karra in his supplementary question said that given the number of schemes shown in Annexure, the city should not face any shortage of potable water.
"And wherever work is in progress, I urge the government to take a review into it," Karra said in the House. He referred to four particular schemes, under execution and said the work on these schemes was going on at snail's place.
“I request the government and the concerned minister in-charge to take a review of these four schemes,” he said.
Earlier the minister informed the House that 18 projects including four in Shalteng constituency have been approved under AMRUT 2.0 to augment the water scenario in Srinagar city.
“Old and damaged pipelines are regularly being replaced as and when required and the department is taking proactive steps to improve the pipeline network across the city,” the minister informed the House.
