MLA flags financial crisis at BGSB University, seeks special package
Rajouri, Feb 10: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri is reportedly facing a severe financial crunch, with employees reportedly unpaid for three to four months, prompting MLA Iftkhar Ahmed to seek a special financial package from the Jammu and Kashmir government during the Assembly session.
MLA Rajouri Iftkhar Ahmed, who termed the situation “worrisome” and sought a special financial package from the Jammu and Kashmir Government to stabilise the institution.
Established over two decades ago, BGSB University is located in Dhanore village, nearly seven kilometres from Rajouri town. The university offers a wide range of academic programmes including undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses, along with technical, vocational and specialised courses.
It also runs a nursing college and affiliated institutions in Rajouri, Jammu and Kishtwar. Students from across Jammu and Kashmir as well as other parts of the country pursue their studies at the institution.
While appreciating the budget presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and describing it as one based on a holistic developmental approach, the MLA expressed concern that no specific allocation had been earmarked for BGSB University.
“BGSB University is a matter of pride for the entire Pir Panjal region, but unfortunately it is passing through a very difficult phase,” Iftkhar Ahmed said during the Assembly proceedings.
He claimed that university employees have not received their salaries for the past three to four months, which, according to him, reflects the gravity of the financial strain being faced by the institution.
Highlighting the importance of human resources in educational institutions, the MLA said that staff members form the backbone of the system and delay in salaries not only affects morale but also hampers the overall functioning of the university.
Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Iftkhar Ahmed reiterated that the prevailing situation at BGSB University “almost amounts to a financial crisis.”
He urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Higher Education Minister Sakina Itoo to extend a special financial package to the university to address the constraints and ensure its smooth functioning.
The MLA also requested the Higher Education Minister to personally visit the campus, assess the situation first-hand and take immediate remedial measures, particularly on the financial front.
Earlier, former CM Mehbooba Mufti had also pointed towards the situation in university expressing concern on shortage of financial resources.
In a statement few days ago, Mehbooba Mufti termed the situation deeply alarming over the decline in funding for Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Pir Panjal.
