Baramulla, Dec 9: An attempt by unidentified miscreants to burn a section of the newly installed Astro Turf at Azad Gunj football ground in Baramulla has triggered outrage among residents and football enthusiasts, who have urged authorities to swiftly identify and punish those responsible.

On Monday evening, some miscreants tried to burn a portion of the turf by lighting a cigarette and throwing it onto the synthetic surface.

Fortunately, the fire was spotted in time and immediately doused, preventing any major damage to the turf.

The incident has sparked outrage in the area, with residents terming it unfortunate and urging the administration to take immediate action against the culprits involved in the incident.

The astroturf was recently installed at a cost of around Rs 6–7 crore at the Azad Gunj football ground by the Jammu and Kashmir sports council, and the initiative is considered a major boost for football in the Baramulla district.

The local residents have appealed to the authorities to act swiftly against the culprits.

"With the help of CCTV footage, the culprits should be arrested,” said a local resident.

While condemning the incident, the locals said that such an incident should be investigated properly, as youths of the town are disturbed by this incident.

"We have worked tirelessly for the setup of this turf. It is a FIFA-approved turf, and in the future some national-level tournaments are likely to be held. This vandalism will not be allowed. The Baramulla police are requested to take stern action against the culprits," said Tariq Ahmad Mughloo, president of the traders federation of Baramulla.

A civil society member, advocate Mudasir Naqshbandi, urged the deputy commissioner of Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, to ensure the protection of this important asset.

"The installation of CCTV cameras and round-the-clock vigil of this facility is extremely important. The administration should ensure that such an asset is protected at any cost," Advocate Naqshbandi said in a letter addressed to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla.
