Mian family remains undefeated in Kangan

Ganderbal, Oct 8: National Conference (NC) candidate, Mian Mehar Ali, has emerged victorious from Kangan assembly constituency.

He won the Kangan reserves ST seat by defeating his nearest rival- Peoples Democratic Party candidate Syed Jamat Ali Shah by a margin of 3819 votes. Mian Mehar secured 28907 votes while as his nearest rival and PDP's candidate Syed Jamat Ali Shah got 25088 votes. Mehar Ali succeeded his father Mian Altaf Ahmad, who has been continuously winning the assembly elections from the Kangan assembly constituency since 1987.

Mian Altaf has been a five-time MLA from Kangan and recently in his parliament elections debut, emerged winner from the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency by a huge margin of votes. Mian Altaf is considered to be among the most influential politicians across J&K.

Soon after the official announcement was made that NC candidate Mian Mehar Ali has won the seat, thousands of National conference and Mian family supporters waiting outside raised slogans, danced and celebrated the victory. The jubilant NC supporters were seen hugging each other. Talking to reporters after the election results, Mian Altaf said that it is the victory of his supporters. "I am thankful to Allah and the voters of Kangan constituency who have reposed their faith again this time, adding that this is the victory of people” He said that the elected representatives will try their best to come up to the expectations of the people and to serve them best possible way,"Altaf added. He further said that people have voted National Conference and given them a huge responsibility and now it is upto the National Conference leadership and those who are elected to come upto the expectations of the people. Mian Altaf said that this mandate to the National conference is after the 1977 elections for NC.

Notably, the Mian family has remained undefeated since 1957 in Kangan constituency. Mian Mehar Ali son of veteran National Conference party leader and sitting Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmed , stepped into the fray from a family bastion represented by his father , grandfather and great grandfather since the 1957. Mian Mehar Ali is a fourth generation from the influential Mian family who contested from the family bastion of Kangan.

The winning of Mian Altaf in parliament elections paved way for his son to jump into electoral fray. Mians have been an impressive political profile in the region. Brought up in family with an impressive political profile is seen as a key element for him to enter and win.
