Srinagar, Feb 4: A fresh spell of light to moderate snowfall is expected across the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, while the plains, particularly in South Kashmir, are likely to experience light snowfall.

The changing weather pattern comes as winter gradually transitions from the harsh “Chillai Kalan” to the milder phases of “Chillai Khurd” and “Chillai Bacha”.

In the Jammu division, light rainfall is expected in the plains, while the Chenab Valley—covering districts like Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban—is likely to witness light snowfall, particularly in the upper reaches.

The Pir Panjal range, which separates Jammu from Kashmir, is also set to receive fresh snowfall, potentially affecting connectivity along key roads, including the Mughal Road and the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

In Kashmir Valley, the higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Gurez, are expected to receive light to moderate snowfall. Meanwhile, the plains across North Kashmir, including Baramulla and Kupwara, and parts of Central Kashmir, including Srinagar, may see intermittent light snowfall mixed with rain.

South Kashmir districts—Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, and Kulgam—are expected to experience light snowfall, particularly in the higher reaches, while the plains could witness drizzles or light snowflakes. Authorities have urged residents in higher altitudes to remain cautious as slippery conditions and reduced visibility could affect movement.

According to the MeT department, the current weather system is expected to subside by Wednesday afternoon, leading to an improvement in conditions. Dry weather is likely to persist until the night of February 9. However, another fresh spell of snowfall and light rainfall is expected between February 9 and 10, which could again bring disruptions to transportation and daily life in affected areas.
