Mehraj Malik wrongly detained, no strong case against him: Sajad Lone

Srinagar, Jan 31: People’s Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday said that Doda MLA Mehraj Malik has been wronged and is being kept in detention despite there being no strong case against him.

Talking to reporters, Lone said he sympathises with Mehraj Malik, recalling that he himself has experienced imprisonment in the past. “I know what prison means. If there is no solid case against him, then there is no justification for keeping him behind bars,” he said.

Lone appealed to the government to release Mehraj Malik so that he can participate in the forthcoming Assembly session and represent the people who elected him. He said continued detention of an elected legislator deprives the constituency of its democratic voice.

He further stated that allowing elected representatives to function freely is essential for the health of democracy and urged the authorities to act without delay. [KNT]
