Meeting deadlines important
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri recently directed the concerned officers of Public Works Department (PWD) for finishing all works on the Srinagar city roads. He also directed ensuring pothole free roads across Kashmir Division.
Addressing a meeting, the Divisional Commissioner stressed on agencies entrusted with upgradation and development of roads to strictly adhere to deadlines for completion of project works at critical junctions and locations, an official press release said.
The directions comprise a step in right direction and it is being hoped that those are followed on the ground. Slow pace of works on city roads and frequent missing of deadlines have been causing lot of inconvenience to the people. It not only affects the vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement on the roads but also affects the business of shopkeepers in such areas.
Frequent traffic jamming is witnessed during peak hours of the morning and evening and it takes lot of time to get the traffic jam cleared. Problems get added during the rainy days due to dug up roads. At some places the diversion road stretches are not traffic worthy. But due to compulsion the vehicles have to ply on such surfaces.
The ongoing work at Jehangir Chowk junction and work on construction of flyovers at Nowgam, Sanatnagar and Bemina is also causing traffic jamming. The Nowgam and Bemina flyovers have already missed several deadlines in the past. Secondly there is need for improvement of riding surfaces at these flyover construction sites.
The dilapidated condition of roads in Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir Valley is also a big problem. The potholes on roads create lot of problems for the vehicles. In absence of any timely repair these potholes become bigger with time due to traffic and rains.
The vehicles have to move through these big potholes everyday and almost on all city roads and rest of Kashmir. The vehicles sometimes suffer damage during the movement on the damaged road stretches. There is an immediate need to make necessary repairs on these roads to make those pothole free.
Roads should be in a better condition in the capital city and other parts of Valley also. There are reports of bad condition of roads in several parts of Jammu region also. An improvement should be made there too. Dilapidated roads in hilly areas sometimes also lead to accidents and loss of lives and injuries.
