In the heart of Sopore, Kashmir, lies a treasure trove of cultural significance - Meeras Mahal, a private museum dedicated to preserving the region’s century-old heritage. Founded by the indefatigable Atiqa Bano Masoodi, popularly known as “Behenji” or “Attasaheb,” this museum is a labor of love, showcasing over 7,000 artifacts collected by her throughout her life.

Born in Sopore into the esteemed Masoodi dynasty, as the grand daughter of the great Islamic scholar Ghulam Muhammad Hanfi Sopori Masoodi, Atiqa Bano Masoodi was a renowned educationist and activist who championed the preservation of Kashmiri culture and heritage. Her passion for promoting the region’s rich cultural legacy was evident in her tireless efforts to collect and preserve artifacts, which eventually led to the establishment of Meeras Mahal.

After retiring from the Department of Education, Atiqa Bano Masoodi devoted herself to establishing the Meeras Mahal Museum, which finally came to fruition in 2002, with the current building being inaugurated in November 2023. Her dream of creating a space where people could experience and appreciate Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage has become a reality, thanks to her unwavering dedication and perseverance.

The museum is a testament to Atiqa Bano Masoodi’s unwavering commitment to preserving Kashmir’s cultural heritage. Its extensive collection includes:

Traditional Instruments: Tumbaknaer, Rabab, Sarang, Sitar, and Swarnai, which showcase the region’s rich musical heritage.

Kashmiri Artisanship: exquisite examples of woodwork, basketry, wickerwork, and intricate jewelry like Halqaband and Daek Tik, highlighting the skill and craftsmanship of Kashmiri artisans.

Historical Manuscripts: handwritten Qur’ans, Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit manuscripts, which provide a glimpse into the region’s rich literary and intellectual heritage.

Cultural Relics: traditional dresses, utensils, and earthenware, which offer a glimpse into the daily lives of Kashmiris past and present.
