Medium enterprises poised as key drivers of Viksit Bharat: NITI Aayog
New Delhi, May 26: NITI Aayog today released a landmark report titled *“Designing a Policy for Medium Enterprises”*, presenting a strategic blueprint to transform India’s medium enterprises into major engines of economic growth under the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
The report was unveiled by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery in the presence of Members Dr. V.K. Saraswat and Dr. Arvind Virmani. It highlights the disproportionately small share of medium enterprises—only 0.3% of registered MSMEs—despite their significant contribution to exports and job creation. These enterprises account for nearly 40% of MSME exports, underscoring their untapped potential.
NITI Aayog identifies medium enterprises as critical to India’s transition toward industrial self-reliance and global competitiveness. However, the report notes that these businesses face persistent challenges, including limited access to customized finance, inadequate R\&D support, slow technology adoption, weak testing infrastructure, and skill mismatches.
To address these issues, the report outlines a comprehensive policy approach aimed at strengthening financial access, encouraging Industry 4.0 integration, fostering innovation, improving regulatory support, and aligning skilling initiatives with industry needs. It also emphasizes the need for a centralized digital ecosystem to guide enterprises through schemes and compliance requirements.
The report concludes that empowering medium enterprises through targeted interventions and collaborative governance is vital for innovation-led growth, increased exports, and employment generation—making them a cornerstone of India’s development goals for 2047.
