Assembly elections: MCMC issues showcause notice to journalist for 'violating' media ethics

Bandipora, 5 Sep: The Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) in Bandipora of north Kashmir on Thursday asked journalists not to affect "level playing field".

In a show cause notice issued against one journalist, the committee noted that a journalist was observed urging "general public to vote and support for a particular person," hence violating "principles and conventions of journalism."

"Media persons are supposed to be apolitical and desist from generating a narrative and campaigning for a particular candidate of any political party," the committee observed.

The office noted that the TV journalist was found in "continuous involvement in propagating and campaigning for a single candidate... thereby affecting public opinion and people's choice.

The journalist has been asked to explain his position by or before 4PM today, the notice reads, stressing on "why action under rules shall not be initiated against" him for violating Media Ethics and Principles of Fair Journalism.
