Measures to prevent harassment of women in public transport in Ganderbal rolled out

Ganderbal, Jan 29: Women now have a helpline at their disposal to report matters of sexual harassment occurring while traveling in the public transport in Ganderbal district. The measures have been taken in view of the reports of female students, women facing harassment while traveling in public transport.

Official sources told Greater Kashmir that taking serious note of the matter , the Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Shyambir has called for immediate measures to address the concern. DC Ganderbal in a meeting discussed the measures like creating awareness about what constitutes harassment and taking prompt and strict action against such instances to prevent the cases of harassment.

" Numerous reports have been shared by female students and women commuters regarding incidents of harassment while using public transportation. To address this concern, 24x7 helpline numbers are provided by the administration" officials said.

Three helpline numbers have been issued by the authorities including one each by district administration, special cell for women and Sakhi- one stop center .

Locals particularly civil society groups have hailed the measures being taken by the district administration for redressal of the issue. The members stressed the need for a mechanism that encourages women to speak out against and report instances of sexual harassment in public transport and the importance of the administration in taking strict actions which will act as deterrence and help prevent harrasment cases.
