MEA launches upgraded Passport Seva programme, e-Passports for citizens in India, abroad

New Delhi, Nov 13: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has rolled out upgraded versions of its flagship Passport Seva Programme (PSP), including PSP Version 2.0, the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP V2.0), and the new e-Passport, aimed at enhancing efficiency, security, and user convenience for citizens in India and abroad.

The global version, GPSP V2.0, was subsequently launched across Indian Embassies and Consulates on October 28, 2025. The new system introduces a digitally integrated ecosystem connecting all stakeholders in passport services. It features AI-powered chat and voice bots to assist applicants, a redesigned website and mobile app with auto-filled forms, simplified document uploads, and online payment options through UPI and QR codes.

A major highlight of the upgrade is the launch of e-Passports, which combine paper and electronic elements. Each e-Passport contains an embedded RFID chip and antenna storing the holder’s data as per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, ensuring enhanced security and authentication. Newly issued passports will now be e-Passports, while existing ones will remain valid until expiry. The MEA said the initiative reaffirms its commitment to improving service delivery, safeguarding citizen data, and aligning India’s passport systems with global standards. The new programmes are part of the government’s broader effort to leverage technology for greater ease of living and smoother international travel.
