New Delhi, July 25: In response to recent U.S. criticism regarding the "symbolism and timing" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between New Delhi and Moscow. The ministry asserted that in a multipolar world, every country has the autonomy to make its own choices.

"India has a long-standing relationship with Russia that is based on mutuality of interests. In a multipolar world, all countries have the freedom of choice. It is essential for everybody to be mindful of and appreciate such realities," stated Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. This statement came after U.S. diplomat Donald Lu expressed disappointment over Modi's visit during a hearing at the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu addressed American lawmakers, stating, "I could not agree with you more about our disappointment about the symbolism and the timing of Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Moscow. We are having those tough conversations with our Indian friends."

Lu further noted, "We did not see any new major defence deals or major discussions of technology cooperation. However, Modi did express his belief that the war in Ukraine could not be won on the battlefield and expressed his pain over the loss of children's lives in the war."

Prime Minister Modi's two-day visit to Russia earlier this month included several meetings with President Vladimir Putin. The diplomatic embrace between the two leaders drew significant attention, especially as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the visit, calling it a setback to peace efforts amidst a deadly Russian missile strike where civilians and children were killed.

India has repeatedly abstained from United Nations votes and meetings aimed at censuring Russia for its war against Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi has consistently advocated for diplomacy and dialogue over conflict as the path to resolution.

India’s stance reflects its historical ties with Russia and its commitment to maintaining strategic autonomy in international relations, despite the complexities of global geopolitics.
