MC Kulgam clears encroachments from pavements

Kulgam, Dec 8: The Municipal Council (MC) Kulgam on Friday continued its campaign to remove the hoardings and encroachers from footpaths and roadsides in south Kashmir's Kulgam town.

Mohamamd Irfan, Executive Officer MC Kulgam told Greater Kashmir that the department has been clearing the footpaths of encroachers for the last three days.

"We are also removing the hoardings put up illegally in the town", said the Executive Officer. He said that over the last few days a fine of Rs 8,000 has also been realised from the violators in the town.

" We have also seized various items from the villagers", added the official. The action was taken after the residents raised their concern over the vendors occupying roadsides and footpaths, making it almost impossible for the pedestrians to walk along the pavements.

"The pedestrians were forced to walk in the middle of the road", said a group of residents. They said that the shopkeepers also spread their merchandise in front of their shops, which results in long traffic snarls.

"The town witnessed bumper to bumper traffic along all thoroughfares and streets due to the occupation of pavements and roadsides by the shopkeepers", said the residents.

They also said that the removal of illegal hoardings was also important as they had defaced the town.
