Mass protests sweep US against Trump’s policies
New Delhi, Oct 19: Massive crowds gathered across major US cities on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s policies.
Demonstrations took place in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles, drawing tens of thousands of participants. In New York City, Times Square became the focal point as streets filled with demonstrators carrying signs and chanting pro-democracy slogans. Authorities estimated over 100,000 people took part across the city’s five boroughs, with no reports of violence or arrests.
The protests, organised under the “No Kings” movement, emphasised peaceful resistance. Participants accused the Trump administration of undermining democratic institutions through expansive executive actions, including the deployment of National Guard troops and the curbing of congressional powers.
Protests were also reported in Washington DC, where large crowds gathered near the Capitol. Similar demonstrations took place abroad, including in London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and Toronto, in solidarity with the American rallies. Republican governors in several states placed National Guard units on standby, while critics accused them of using militarised measures to intimidate peaceful protesters.
