Man convicted of rape, sentenced to life imprisonment
Anantnag, Oct 25: The Anantnag court on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping and impregnating his daughter. In addition, the accused has been ordered to pay Rs 10 lakh for the victim’s education, medical care, and rehabilitation.
Principal and District Session Judge Tahir Rashid Raina described the crime as “extreme depravity and a complete collapse of ethical values,” noting the severe breach of trust involved in such acts.
The father was convicted under Section 376(3) IPC (rape), Section 6 of the POCSO Act (aggravated penetrative sexual assault), and Section 506 IPC (criminal intimidation). All sentences will run concurrently, and the fine will be disbursed to the victim.
The case came to light in March 2022 when the girl’s mother complained to the Women’s Police Station in Anantnag. Police investigations and medical examinations confirmed the abuse, leading to the filing of a charge sheet.
During the trial, the prosecution urged the court to award maximum punishment, emphasising that crimes against children, even within families, would not be tolerated.
A senior prosecuting officer said, “This case highlights the importance of protecting children and ensuring that perpetrators cannot escape the law.”
The court has also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to disburse victim compensation under the Victim Compensation Scheme, with the funds managed by the Child Welfare Committee.
Judge Raina stressed the broader implications, asking, “How did a protector become a tormentor?” The prosecution called for society to unite in safeguarding children and empowering victims to report abuse without fear.
