Poonch, Jan 25: Police have arrested a man in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly posting objectionable and inflammatory content on social media, an act authorities say had the potential to disturb public order and communal harmony.

A police spokesman said on January 25, Poonch Police took cognizance of a social media post uploaded by Onkar Singh (around 60), son of late Inder Singh and a resident of Kamsar, Poonch City.

The post, he said, was found to be deliberately offensive in nature and reportedly hurt public sentiments, triggering resentment among sections of the community.

“Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter, police acted promptly and arrested the accused. He is currently in police custody. Legal proceedings have been initiated against him under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway to examine all aspects of the case,” said the spokesman.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance policy, District Police Poonch said any attempt to disturb communal harmony, spread hatred, or incite unrest through misuse of social media platforms will be dealt with strictly as per law.

Meanwhile, police issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise responsibility and restraint while expressing views on social media. Authorities warned that posting or sharing provocative, misleading, or offensive content could invite serious legal consequences.

Members of the public have been asked to report any objectionable or inflammatory content to the nearest police station or through designated police helpline numbers.
