LUKEWARM RESPONSE | HED exempts 64 GDCs from making admission on CUET score
Srinagar, Apr 14: The Higher Education Department (HED) has exempted around 64 Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) across Jammu and Kashmir from their participation in CUET for the 2024-25 academic session citing low response of the students for admission to these colleges.
However, the department said that the admissions in these colleges would be done in a centralised manner through the e-SAMARTH portal based on the marks of the students obtained in their class 12th examination instead of enrolling students based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) score for the academic session 2024-25.
The official notification in this regard has been issued by the Principal Secretary HED Alok Kumar given “very low” CUET-based admissions in these GDCs during last year's admissions.
“The situation was revisited this year after discussions with all the stakeholders and it was decided to identify the colleges where the students did not prefer to seek admission through the CUET mode keeping in view their geographical locations, topography, availability of the infrastructure,” the notification reads.
The HED has identified 64 GDCs – 29 in Kashmir and 35 in Jammu, the list of which has been furnished by the concerned nodal principal, which received a lukewarm response from the students for their admissions in these colleges based on CUET scores.
The CUET-based admissions in these colleges were reported “very low” during the last academic year.
The CUET-2024 is scheduled to be held from May 15, 2024, to May 31, 2024, in 13 mediums across India for the evaluation of candidates desirous of seeking admission to various undergraduate programmes.
“It has been observed that CUET-based admissions in far-off colleges located at Marwah, Tangdhar, Gurez, Mahore, and other places put the students in an undue disadvantageous situation," the notification reads.
The Nodal Principals from Srinagar and Jammu have furnished the list of colleges based on the available data and locations of the colleges for exemption of these government colleges for making admissions through CUET and allow them to make admissions during the academic session 2024-24 without CUET score.
“In light of these circumstances and in the interest of the aspiring students, the admissions in these respective higher educational institutions will be done in a centralised manner through the e-SAMARTH portal based on the marks of the students obtained in their class 12th examination," the notification reads.
