New Delhi, Oct 1: Lt Gen Virendra Vats on Wednesday took over as the Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), succeeding Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh.

He assumes charge at a time when the NCC, the world’s largest uniformed youth organisation, is expanding its strength to 20 lakh cadets across 28 states and eight Union territories.

Commissioned into the 19 KUMAON Regiment in 1988, Lt Gen Vats brings 37 years of service in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, with key tenures in Arunachal Pradesh, Kashmir, and Army Headquarters. He has commanded an infantry brigade under the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and most recently served as Commandant of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Indian Military Academy, College of Defence Management, and the National Defence College, he is regarded for his operational expertise and leadership acumen. His appointment is expected to give fresh momentum to the NCC’s evolving role in character building, digital skill development, and preparing youth for the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
