Srinagar, May 14: The election scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has been marked by a significant number of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations, with election authorities registering 11 FIRs in connection with these violations.

Since March 16, a total of 234 complaints of MCC violations have been received by the authorities.

“We have registered 11 FIRs after taking cognisance of these complaints. We have also issued notices in 80 complaints, and inquiries have been initiated in 29 complaints,” election officials said.

Srinagar district has witnessed the highest number of MCC violations, with 46 complaints, followed by Jammu with 34 complaints.

Of the total complaints received, 15 have been forwarded to district grievance cells for further action.

Election officials in Srinagar said that 36 MCC violations were received through official mail of which 21 were against government employees and 15 against candidates or parties.

“Inquiries are underway in the case of government employees, and four employees have been suspended for participating in political activities. Notices have been served to parties, candidates, and workers regarding MCC violations,” they said.

Authorities disclosed that state and central agencies have seized cash, liquor, drugs, and freebies worth over Rs 40 crore at 10 places during the election period.

So far, polls have been conducted in three of the five Lok Sabha constituencies in J&K - Jammu, Udhampur, and Srinagar.

Srinagar recorded a voter turnout of 38 percent, the highest since 1989.

The remaining two Lok Sabha seats, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri, are scheduled to vote in the next two rounds on May 20 and 25. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure free and fair elections in the region.
