Long-pending Poonch–Tangmarg road finally poised for construction
Srinagar, Oct 6: The long-pending construction of the Poonch–Tangmarg road, a crucial link between Pir Panjal and north Kashmir, is finally expected to move forward after nearly a decade. Once completed, the road is projected to reduce travel time between Poonch and Tangmarg by three to four hours, significantly improving connectivity for local residents and boosting regional mobility.
According to reliable sources, the Union Defence Ministry has sanctioned the project, and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is expected to begin construction once all necessary formalities are completed. The project has gained momentum through the combined efforts of the Defence Ministry, BRO, and Anantnag–Rajouri Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Anantnag-Rajouri MP Mian Altaf Ahmad said the construction of the historical Poonch–Tangmarg road, linking Pir Panjal with north Kashmir, is a long-pending project.
He expressed hope that work on the road would commence soon, emphasizing its strategic and historical importance. “This ancient route can serve as an additional corridor to the Mughal Road during summer,” he said.
Mian Altaf added that, according to reliable sources, the Defence Ministry has sanctioned the construction proposal, which had been pending for years. The project is currently awaiting clearance from the Wildlife Department. “Since the Wildlife Board has not yet been reconstituted, the approval process will need to be expedited once it is functional,” he noted. He said the road, once completed, is expected to reduce travel time by three to four hours.
Expressing gratitude to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BRO officials, Mian Altaf said the project will significantly benefit the local population, improving connectivity and providing an alternative route for travelers in the region.
