The move follows the discovery of cash at Justice Varma’s Delhi residence in March, his indictment in a preliminary in-house probe, and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna’s recommendation for removal. The government has since moved a motion in Parliament to begin formal impeachment proceedings. Justice Kumar, a former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2023. Justice Shrivastava took charge as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in July 2025 after serving in the Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan High Courts. Acharya, 92, a five-term Advocate General of Karnataka and noted prosecutor in the Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case, is the panel’s oldest member, as reported by Bar & Bench.
