Locals seek action against cab drivers violating traffic norms in Uri
Uri, Nov 22: Residents of remote Uri area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have urged authorities to take strict action against erring cab drivers who are violating traffic norms.
Locals told Greater Kashmir that a growing number of cabs in the town are being operated without valid permits, insurance, fitness certificates or proper driving licenses.
“With no checks from the concerned authorities, these unregulated cabs are putting the lives of passengers at risk,” said Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Garkote village.
He expressed concern over the issue of overloading in many of these vehicles. “Many cabs, which are meant to carry a limited number of passengers, are often seen overloaded, with several people crammed into a single vehicle. This is a serious safety concern, particularly for those of us who rely on these cabs daily,” he said. “In the event of an accident, it could be catastrophic.”
Abrar Bhat, another local from Uri town questioned how these untrained drivers are being allowed to operate these cabs. “They have no knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. It seems like the drivers have no regard for the law, and there is no strict monitoring of their actions,” he said.
Residents have demanded stricter enforcement and the introduction of surprise inspections to curb the illegal operation of cabs. They also emphasised the need for awareness campaigns to educate both drivers and passengers about the dangers of overloading and traveling in vehicles that lack proper documentation.
“The authorities need to do more to ensure drivers are following the rules. We need safer roads for everyone,” said Shafiq Ahmad, another local resident.
With winter approaching, the demand for transportation is expected to rise, and residents fear that without immediate action, road safety could continue to be compromised. They hope the authorities will take action before the situation worsens.
Ravinder Pal Singh, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir told Greater Kashmir that they would intensify checking drives in the coming days.
“FIRs will be registered against drivers involved in any form of traffic violations,” he said. “I am also planning to visit Uri in the coming days for a personal inspection,” the SSP added.
