Ganderbal, Oct 18: A colorful blend of science, tradition and enterprise marked the “Livestock Show 2025” was organised by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir (SKUAST-K), at its Shuhama campus in Ganderbal. The two-day event turned the serene campus into a lively fairground with scores of stalls, attracting farmers, scientists, animal lovers and agri-entrepreneurs from across the Valley.

The officials at the University said that from cattle, sheep and goat shows to exhibits on fish, horses, rabbits and animal fibre products, the event showcased the region’s diverse livestock wealth and scientific progress. Food stalls and interactive sessions between farmers and scientists added to the festive atmosphere.

“This show has become a centre of attraction for livestock enthusiasts and those working on animal-based technologies,” said one of the organisers.

Among the university stalls, the Division of Livestock Products Technology drew significant attention. The team displayed a range of Pashmina and wool-based innovations developed through eco-friendly processes.

“We are using natural dyes with zero pollution to create value-added animal fibre products. Our focus is also on hand-holding private ventures so they can adopt our technologies and build sustainable businesses around these traditional crafts,” said Dr Sheikh Rafeh Ahmad, from the division.

Another major highlight was the stall by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ganderbal, which showcased an impressive collection of local agricultural produce, including nearly 30 varieties of chillies, fresh vegetables, pickles and honey.

Adding an aquatic touch to the show, postgraduate students from the Fisheries Division presented their research on fish post-harvest technology. Meanwhile, private participation of young entrepreneurs also stood out. Aqib Hassan, Sales Officer at Skylark Cattle Feed, said the event offered a great platform for youth interested in agri-entrepreneurship. The show also attracted passionate animal lovers like Asrar Manzoor, who brought his hybrid bull to the display. Others had bought ducks, rabbits, horses and pigeons to display at their

“This is my first time participating in such a show. I rear animals out of passion, not for business . It is a joy to see so many people appreciate this side of farming.” Asrar said.

During the event, The Mountain Research Centre for Sheep and Goat showcased elite local breeds including Pashmina, Boer and Bakarwal goats.

“Our focus is on improving the productivity of local breeds and supporting farmers. We are working on producing triplets and developing high-weight mutton-producing breeds suited to Kashmir’s high consumption demand.” said Dr Muzammil Abdullah.

Earlier in his inaugural address, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani appreciated the University for organising such a meaningful event. He expressed delight in witnessing the treasure of livestock wealth in Jammu & Kashmir and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that contribute to farmer empowerment. He emphasized that precision livestock farming holds significant potential to transform rural livelihoods and the agricultural economy of the region, said an official statement.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Nazir A Ganai, in his address, highlighted the objective of the event, to create awareness among farmers and the general public about the livestock resources of J&K and their importance in strengthening the agri-economy. He stated that SKUAST-K is actively working to transform agriculture in the region from traditional to commercial and secondary agriculture, through initiatives such as the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).
