A mega development package worth more than 10 thousand crores INR stands approved by the centre for J&K. This project involves building some crucial tunnels for inter regional connectivity, besides laying some major roads. The news comes at an occasions when J&K is going through a phase that is very low on anything that could excite its people. While in any situation this news would generate interest and the union government would be hailed for its decision, it coming  at this time and in this situation makes it an extra ordinary announcement. So the first thing that this announcement brings to fore is the joy that people across the regions of J&K are expressing. Such  developmental initiative is more than welcome.

Under this project the inter-regional connectively will hugely improve. This is something people of J&K had been demanding for decades. Since J&K is a region that has different weather zones and these regions remain disconnected during harsh winter months, it will make a huge difference  to the lives of people living on either side of these tunnels. The people on either side of the tunnels can develop reliable connections in terms of business, education and travel. The age old cultural connections will also strengthen.

The amenities, particularly in health sector, available in the cities like Srinagar can be available throughout year to the people living across these tunnels. We have often seen how during winter months, even otherwise also when there is slight disturbance in weather, that people suffer in these regions.  Once the tunnels are in operation, and roads are laid out fully the ease of transportation will not just bring relief to people but give a solid push to the development in other sectors.

While people, and the political leadership especially the party in power, have welcomed this initiative, there is a nagging fear. In almost all the major development works we have seen that deadlines are hardly met. That should be taken care of. Whatever agencies finally get involved in the actual project work, they should meet the deadlines. Also whatever coordination is required between central and UT agencies should be neatly drawn and efficiently conducted.
