Jammu, Dec 23: Light showers Monday brought brief respite at isolated places in Jammu leading to slight improvement in plummeting temperature.

As many hilly areas received fresh snowfall, several parts of Jammu city and adjoining areas besides some other plains in the Jammu region experienced drizzle yet its impact was scattered.

As per the weatherman, the impact of this brief spell was not widespread hence respite too was not very significant.

Chief Scientist and In-charge Agrometeorology, SKUAST-Jammu, Mahender Singh told Greater Kashmir that isolated places in the plains of Jammu region received light thunder showers due to Western Disturbances.

“While parts of Jammu city areas received light showers this afternoon at around 2 pm, stretches across Tawi bridge, including Gandhinagar and other adjoining areas could not get even this scant relief. Rains lashed our Chatha campus but the stretch just 2 km from it was totally dry,” he said.

Singh said, “Hilly areas in the region today experienced light to moderate snowfall and isolated places of plains in the region witnessed drizzle demonstrating rain variability due to Western Disturbances. On December 26 and 27, Western Disturbances (WD) will bring another spell of light showers in the region at isolated places. The impact may be widespread.”

According to him, WD-influenced shower-spells to be witnessed in the region, in the first week of January, likely on January 5 and 6, will have a widespread impact.

“Today’s brief showers could not bring significant relief for farmers due to ‘trace-amount.’ Farmers in Kandi areas in the Jammu region are desperately waiting for a good rainy spell for sowing seasonal crops. Monday showers brought little relief in the areas where it broke dry weather spell,” he said, responding to queries about the significance of these light showers for farmers.

However, drizzle definitely stalled free-fall of mercury to some extent bringing respite from frost injuries, Singh said.

“Today our Chatha observatory recorded 2.6 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature in Jammu. Drizzle will now bring foggy conditions in the plains. From December 26, there would be cloudy weather conditions again, moving the temperature up,” he said.
