Srinagar, Jan 8: In preparation for the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel, extensive security measures are being put in place across Ganderbal district and elsewhere, with the Special Protection Group (SPG) to take over the venue by Thursday evening.

The visit is a highly anticipated event, marking a significant milestone in J&K’s infrastructure development.

According to senior Police officials, the entire district is being placed under tight security, with a particular focus on the venue and its surrounding areas.

“Peaks around the venue are being occupied by security personnel, and thorough searches are being carried out to ensure a safe environment,” a senior officer told Greater Kashmir.

The security arrangements, he said, are a coordinated effort between various security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the SPG.

“The preparations are being overseen by senior officers from the security establishment, who are closely monitoring developments and adjusting strategies as needed.”

The venue of the inauguration, where the PM is expected to unveil the Z-Morh Tunnel project, is set amidst the rugged terrain of the Ganderbal district.

Given the strategic importance of the event, authorities have ensured that no risks are taken.

The surrounding peaks have been secured and special search operations are underway to ensure a safe environment.

The heightened security comes in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred on October 20 last year when a terror attack targeted a workers’ camp near Gagangir, close to the Z-Morh Tunnel construction site.

The terrorists entered the camp and opened indiscriminate fire, killing seven civilians, including six non-local workers employed by the infrastructure company tasked with building the tunnel.

In addition, a local doctor, who was among those present at the camp, was also killed in the attack.

One of the terrorists was later killed in an encounter in the Dachigam area of Srinagar.

In response to that attack, authorities escalated security measures in the area, deploying additional forces to ensure the safety of the workers and prevent any further escalation.

The Z-Morh Tunnel, which has been under construction since 2018, is a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Ganderbal and the higher reaches of Kashmir.

The tunnel is a vital part of J&K’s road network, reducing travel time and improving access to remote areas, especially during the winter months when heavy snowfall can block key passes.
